The Itinerary

The Blue Ridge Parkway — nicknamed "America's Favorite Drive" — is a 755 km federal scenic route built between 1935 and 1987 to cross the Appalachians with no traffic lights or billboards. Paired with Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive to the north, it forms one of America's most contemplative road trips at 780 km total.

From Asheville, the hipster North Carolina town (home to Biltmore Estate — America's largest private home), the parkway climbs to Mount Mitchell (2,037 m, the highest peak east of the Mississippi), Linville Gorge and the Grandfather Mountain viaduct. The Linn Cove Tunnel is an engineering marvel embedded into the cliff face.

At the Virginia line, Skyline Drive takes over and winds 169 km through Shenandoah NP with 75 overlooks and a real chance of spotting black bears from your car. Speed limit 55 km/h the whole way — that's the point: slow down, listen, look. Avoid in winter (partially closed).
