The Itinerary
Past the "elbow" of Cape Cod, the Outer Cape unfurls 65 km of continuous beach protected by Cape Cod National Seashore (created by JFK in 1961). Route 6 runs straight to Provincetown, but Route 6A — the Old King's Highway — is the scenic alternative, longer, through heritage villages of Yarmouth Port, Brewster and Orleans.
Wellfleet, famous for oysters, hosts a still-operating 1950s drive-in cinema. Truro and the Cape Cod National Seashore dunes offer wild beaches (Highland Light, the Cape's oldest lighthouse, 1797). Marconi Beach and Race Point Beach rank among the best Atlantic beaches.
Provincetown ("P-town"), at the very tip, is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ art scene, lobster restaurants, Province Lands Dunes, and whale-watching humpbacks from MacMillan Wharf — Stellwagen Bank is one of the world's top sites. The Pilgrim Monument (77 m) commemorates the Mayflower's 1620 arrival.
