The Itinerary
The iconic road trip to Las Vegas crosses the Mojave Desert and follows old stretches of Route 66. Calico Ghost Town, Mojave National Preserve and Seven Magic Mountains (art installation) are stops.
From Los Angeles, I-15 north crosses the desert. Detour to Calico (restored silver-rush ghost town), Yermo Cafe ("Eddie World"), Baker ("Gateway to Death Valley" and the world's tallest thermometer, 41 m). Approaching Vegas, Ugo Rondinone's Seven Magic Mountains (seven 9-m painted totems) is the photo stop. Las Vegas Strip lights up at sunset.
