Acadiana is the homeland of the Cajuns, descendants of the Acadians deported in 1755. Lafayette is the cultural capital: zydeco music, cuisine (gumbo, étouffée, jambalaya) and living Francophone identity.
From New Orleans, take I-10 through the bayous. Stops: Houma (cajun country swamp tour, alligator viewing), Whitney Plantation (most powerful slavery museum in the US), Avery Island (Tabasco), Breaux Bridge (world crawfish capital). Fais-Dodos (traditional Cajun dances) weekly. Cajun Mardi Gras in February.
