The Itinerary

Lake Tahoe, straddling California and Nevada, is North America's largest alpine lake (501 km², 501 m deep, 1,897 m elevation). Its water is so clear you can see down 22 m. The 116 km loop around the lake, combined with the drive from Sacramento, makes Tahoe one of the West's most loved road trips.

From Sacramento, US-50 crosses the Sierra Nevada foothills via Placerville (1849 Gold Rush capital) before dropping into South Lake Tahoe, the main resort town. Casinos, skiing (Heavenly), lakeside bars and beaches like Pope Beach. California 89 north hugs the west shore to Emerald Bay, a crescent inlet topped by the Vikingsholm castle — Tahoe's signature image.

The quieter north shore (Tahoe City, Kings Beach) leads to Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley, 1960 Olympics) and Northstar ski resorts. The Nevada side (Incline Village, Spooner Lake) closes the loop with less crowd and spectacular lookouts like Sand Harbor.
