The Itinerary
North Cascades National Park, dubbed the "American Alps," holds 300 glaciers — more than all other national parks in the contiguous 48 states combined.
The North Cascades Highway (Hwy 20) crosses the park with iconic viewpoints: Diablo Lake (spectacular glacial turquoise), Washington Pass Overlook, Liberty Bell Mountain. Ross Lake and Diablo Dam. Hwy 20 closed Nov–May. En route, Skagit Valley (tulip fields in April, like Holland). Winthrop is a Western village on the other side of the pass.
