The Itinerary

Florida's Gulf Coast between Tampa and the Sanibel-Captiva islands is the laid-back alternative to Miami's frenzy: turquoise 28°C water, sugar-fine white sand, dolphins and manatees to spot, sun guaranteed even in winter.

St. Petersburg, south of Tampa Bay, hosts the Dali Museum (the largest Salvador Dali collection outside Spain) and the rebuilt Pier. Clearwater Beach with its sand voted "best in USA" many years running, Siesta Key (Sarasota) at 99% pure quartz: the coast lines up exceptional beaches.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands, reached by toll bridge from Fort Myers, are world-famous for shells — the east-west orientation of the islands (rare in the Atlantic) catches every shell drifting from the Gulf. The "Sanibel Stoop" — the collector's bent-over posture — is a local running gag. J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge hosts 245 bird species.
