The Itinerary
Vermont's Route 100 is considered one of North America's most beautiful scenic drives — especially in September-October when sugar maple, beech and birch ignite. It crosses the state for 350 km north to south, hugging the Green Mountains.
From Newport in the north, you descend via Stowe — eastern ski capital, famous for the Von Trapp family (The Sound of Music) who still live at the Trapp Family Lodge. Waterbury hosts the Ben & Jerry's factory (daily tours). Further south, Warren and Waitsfield (Mad River Valley) are backcountry ski paradises. Killington is the largest ski resort in the eastern U.S.
Weston is home to the Vermont Country Store, a vintage general store. Wilmington at the south, near Mount Snow, marks the entry to the Massachusetts Berkshires. "Peak foliage" generally falls between September 25 and October 10 depending on altitude — check Vermont's official maps before leaving.
