The Itinerary

Texas Hill Country, west of Austin, is the "Provence of Texas": rolling hills, wineries, peach orchards, lavender farms, and German villages founded in the 19th century. Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg passes 50+ wineries — America's 4th-largest wine region.

Fredericksburg, founded in 1846 by German immigrants, keeps its Sunday Houses architecture and Bavarian feel (Oktoberfest, Christmas markets). South, Enchanted Rock State Park hosts a 130 m pink granite dome, climbable in 30 minutes. Luckenbach, a 3-person hamlet immortalised by Waylon Jennings, is mandatory for live country music and the classic "Everybody's Somebody in Luckenbach" photo.

In Lockhart (Texas BBQ Capital), Smitty's, Black's and Kreuz Market have served the country's most coveted brisket for 100+ years. Austin's SXSW festival and April's bluebonnet bloom make late spring the best season.
