The Itinerary
Southern New Mexico holds two of America's most extraordinary geological sites, just 230 km apart. Yet much less visited than neighbouring blockbuster parks.
White Sands National Park, at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains, is the world's largest gypsum dune field — 712 km² of brilliant, almost unreal white sand formed from evaporites of ancient Lake Otero. The 13 km Dunes Drive crosses the most spectacular dunes; sandboarding on plastic sleds is the signature activity. Sunsets — when the dunes shift from white to pink to orange — are world-famous.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the east protects one of the world's most complex limestone caves: 119 known caves, including the spectacular Big Room (the 5th-largest underground chamber on Earth, 1.2 km long). Descent by elevator or trail (130 m). In summer, the dusk emergence of 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats from Bat Cave is a stunning natural show.
