The Itinerary

The catastrophic May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens blew 400 m off the mountain's summit, released 26 km³ of material and killed 57 people — the worst volcanic disaster in American history. Forty-six years later, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument lets visitors watch ecosystem rebirth in real time.

The Spirit Lake Memorial Highway (SR-504) starts at Castle Rock (I-5) and climbs 84 km to the Johnston Ridge Observatory — just 8 km from the crater. Plunging views of the growing lava dome, Spirit Lake and the "blast zone" where toppled tree trunks still lie flat like toothpicks.

Ape Cave, a 4 km lava tube to explore in the south, is one of America's longest. Coldwater Lake and Loowit Falls offer easier hikes. Open May to October, the site is one of America's most striking living-geology experiences.
